SALUT HOME Q&A
What is your name, and name of your company?
KANE: Hi! I’m Kane Simmons.
KENDALL: I’m Kendall and Kane and I created Salut Home!
What does Salut Home specialize in?
KANE: Salut Home is an online retail boutique website that specializes in home decor.
KENDALL: We specialize in high-quality and high-style with lots of color and personality.
When did you start Salut Home and what’s the story behind it?
KANE: Salut Home was created in 2017. Kendall has been in the interior design world for over a decade and has owned Kendall Simmons Interiors for 4 years now. While she was building Kendall Simmons Interiors, I was climbing the corporate ladder and dying a little inside with each passing day. We wanted to go into business together for quite some time. With that in mind, I needed to learn a new skill set. This lead to me into the online retail world two years ago. Kendall had a unique problem. She had all of these ideas and aesthetically pleasing decor options, but since homes can only be so big and sometimes clients say ‘no’ to the best ideals, a lot of her decor ideas did not come to fruition. We soon realized that by merging my new skill set and her design experience, we had a business on our hands. With Salut Home, Kendall now has an outlet to bring those high quality products to a much larger audience.
KENDALL: Salut is a French word that means Cheers! and also Hello! Salut Home is the natural outgrowth of our love of travel, good design, and generally having a good time.
What sets you apart from the competition?KANE: The online retail world is super saturated, especially in home decor. We knew this going in and asked ourselves how we were going to stand out amongst the crowd. What was going to be our secret sauce? Well, Kendall and her experience is the most important advantage we have. She has a proven design aesthetic and when you throw her work ethic into the mix, it makes for a great combo. Second, we hand pick the vendors/products that we use. A lot of retail websites will try to sell as many products as possible with as many vendors as possible, with no quality control or personality in mind. We appreciate the cost of quality products and will never water down the brand to make a quick buck off cheap products.Just because it is an online business does not mean we will treat it as such. We are in direct verbal communication with our vendors and see our vendors as an extension of us.
KENDALL: No two designers are the same, and so no two curated collections of home decor are the same either. I want Salut Home to reflect my design perspective, and also bring a happy experience to anyone who crosses our path.
What was your first job?
KANE: My first job was in landscaping. Two summers in a row during high school I was laying pallets of sod, cutting grass, and weed eating.
KENDALL: I worked retail for 2 summers at JCPenney. Needless to say, I learned a lot from the experience!
If you could live any place in the world other than where you currently live, where would it be and why?
KANE: Amsterdam hands down. Kendall and I have been fortunate enough to travel all over the world. Amsterdam spoke to me personally. The overall atmosphere, people, and food are what really excite me. I love how everyone rides bikes and walks everywhere. Amsterdam has beautiful canals and there is always something to do. I know for a fact that I will live in Amsterdam for an extended period of time at some point in my life.
KENDALL: Paris. It’s a cliche, but it’s a cliche for a reason! I feel like the most creative version of me when I’m there, and everywhere you look there’s something to spark inspiration.
What are you currently watching on Netflix?KANE: “Stranger Things”
KENDALL: I love watching old seasons of “The West Wing” as background noise while I work. Exciting, I know!
As kids we want to do and learn everything. As time passes we tend to stick to one thing and stop acquiring new skill sets. If you had a month to learn a new skill what would it be and why?
KANE: I would want to learn how to speak Dutch. I already speak a little German and I want live in the Netherlands someday, so Dutch would be the logical choice!
KENDALL: I would learn to paint in earnest. I play around the edges with it, but I would want to start with the basics and see what I could do!
